Fleets must counteract rising fuel prices with effective mileage management

Increases in the efficiency of modern petrol and diesel engines are being counteracted by rising fuel prices. So says fleet fuel and mileage specialist, The Miles Consultancy (TMC), which is advising fleets to adopt a systematic approach to fleet mileage management to cut costs, rather than just relying on more fuel-efficient vehicles.

TMC calculated the cost of fuelling a car over 10,000 miles, based on inflation-adjusted fuel prices and the average CO2 rating of new cars acquired by fleets each year, from 2004 to the present. The 2010 fuel bill is marginally higher, even though today’s average new fleet car uses 13% less fuel than its 2004 counterpart.

However, if fleets had implemented and achieved a 5% annual reduction in mileage costs between 2004 and 2010, this would have delivered a 14% cost saving in real terms compared with relying solely on improvements in company car CO2 emissions to offset rising fuel prices.

PARIS PREVIEW: Nissan Townpod concept to be revealed

Nissan will present a number of vehicles at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show, including a new concept said to provide an insight into the possible future of the brand's zero-emission vehicles.

Few details have been released about the "Townpod" concept, with only a press shot of a headlight supplied as a teaser, but Nissan says it is 'more than just a car and it's more than just a van - it heralds a new-era of flexible, stylish vehicles that will bring electric-vehicle mobility to the masses.'

Nissan will also be bringing along its LEAF EV, in advance of the first European customer deliveries early next year, as well as the new Micra, which will feature a new three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine, combining emissions of just 115g/km and consumption on the combined cycle of 5l/100km. This will be followed next spring by the introduction of a direct-injection, supercharged version of the same engine, with emissions of just 95g/km.

Latest 9-3 sets CO2 benchmark, with emissions of 119g/km for diesels

Saab has updated its 9-3 range for the 2011 model year with improved specification and a more efficient engine line-up that sees all diesel saloon models duck under the 120g/km benchmark, setting the benchmark for the class.

The latest Saab 9-3 features a range of three twin turbocharged engines, comprising comprises a 130bhp TTiD unit (replacing the previous 120bhp TiD engine), a 160bhp version (replacing the 150bhp TiD engine) and a range-topping 180bhp/400Nm variant that is said to deliver the most efficient performance for a four-cylinder diesel engine in the marketplace in terms of CO2 per unit of horsepower.

All three diesel engines offer CO2 emissions of 119g/km for the saloon - a reduction of 10% compared to the former range - which ensures that the model is tax-exempt for vehicle excise duty. In addition, all saloon models offer a combined cycle fuel consumption of 62.8mpg. 

The SportWagon offers 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 122g/km and for the Convertible, the respective figures are 54.3mpg and 137g/km.
